Political fallout inside wartime Kyiv rarely spills into public view, but President Volodymyr Zelenskyy just broke months of tight-lipped silence regarding the explosive dismissal of former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.
If you have been following the massive street protests and subsequent calls for elections shaking up Ukraine, you already know that Fedorov's exit wasn't quiet. Zelenskyy spent a lengthy off-the-record briefing detailing why he thinks his former ally went off the rails, pointing to severe miscalculations, public agitation, and a messy breakdown in internal communication.
The Core of the Dispute
Fedorov earned widespread praise for modernizing Ukraine's drone warfare units and accelerating technological integration on the battlefield. Yet, friction with military leadership proved fatal to his tenure. When Zelenskyy ousted him, public backlash sparked weeks of demonstrations in Kyiv and other major cities.
Instead of stepping back quietly, Fedorov rejected four alternative government posts offered by the president. Worse still, he took to video addresses to push for national elections, a move that leadership views as dangerously premature while Russian artillery pounds the east. Earlier in the year, the Defense Ministry assured Zelenskyy that SpaceX had given the green light for Ukraine to utilize Starlink over specific Russian territory for deep strike operations, pending political sign-off. Armed with that briefing, Zelenskyy took the claim straight to U.S. President Donald Trump.
The plan unraveled quickly. Musk flatly denied granting permission, viewing the proposed tactical use as an unacceptable escalation. Trump later accused the Ukrainian leader of trying to mislead the White House. When Zelenskyy demanded answers internally, defense officials walked back their claims, admitting the green light never truly existed. It is an expensive blunder that left Kyiv scrambling to repair trust with its most vital international partners.
Defending the Military Command
Protesters haven't just targeted the political echelon; they have also directed their anger at top military commanders, hurling hostile slogans at former army chief Oleksandr Syrskyi and current Defense Minister Maj. Gen. Yevhen Khmara.
Zelenskyy drew a hard line against this rhetoric. He argued that public vitriol calling military leaders "devils" crosses a dangerous line. You cannot run a functional defense strategy while tearing down the very institution keeping the capital safe from daily ballistic strikes.
At the same time, the administration is steering through a staggering twenty-seven-billion-dollar defense budget shortfall after earlier spending maneuvers pulled future funds forward. Anti-corruption agencies have cleared the president of personal involvement in parallel money-laundering probes hitting the presidential office, but the margin for error in Kyiv is shrinking fast.
