Emergency services are desperately combing the rugged coastline of South Australia's Limestone Coast after the bodies of a mother and her toddler were pulled from the ocean. A massive search operation remains active for a missing baby.
The tragedy unfolded at Cape Northumberland near Port MacDonnell. Police and emergency responders rushed to the scene around 11:15 AM on Monday after discovering an abandoned vehicle with its engine running in a cliffside car park.
Officers quickly spotted two bodies in the water below the treacherous cliffs. Authorities identified the deceased as a 36-year-old woman from Compton, near Mount Gambier, along with her young toddler.
The Ongoing Search Efforts
Crews are working against time and worsening weather conditions to locate the infant. The Water Operations Unit, State Emergency Service volunteers, Country Fire Service personnel, and local fishing crews have joined forces to comb the freezing waters and rocky shorelines.
Superintendent Trent Cox addressed reporters regarding the grim outlook. He noted that authorities hold grave concerns for the child, who is less than one year old.
"We're keeping an open mind about everything, but I don't hold out great hope," Superintendent Cox stated.
Predicted bad weather is expected to hamper water-based search operations. However, law enforcement confirmed that foot patrols and thermal imaging drones will continue scanning the rugged coastline.
Police Appeal for Public Assistance
Investigators from the Major Crime Investigation Branch and the Forensic Response Section have established a scene at Cape Northumberland. Police are focusing heavily on mapping out the timeline leading up to the tragedy.
Law enforcement urges anyone with information to come forward. Investigators want to track the movements of a white 2015 Isuzu MUX with South Australian registration S592BJR.
