When the Strait of Hormuz saw shipping traffic drop sharply earlier this year, global energy markets didn't implode overnight. Why? Because Saudi Arabia pulled off a massive logistics bypass. They piped over 70% of their daily crude exports clear across the desert to Yanbu, a deepwater port on the Red Sea. That single pipeline network acted as an emergency valve for Western and Asian economies.

Now that valve is getting squeezed shut.

Yemen's Houthi movement declared a maritime embargo targeting Saudi-bound and Saudi-linked shipping along the Red Sea. With the Bab el-Mandeb Strait sitting directly in their sights, the last remaining exit route for Middle Eastern oil is under direct assault.

The Chokepoint Problem Nobody Can Bypass

The Bab el-Mandeb Strait is an 18-mile-wide funnel between Yemen on the Arabian peninsula and Djibouti on the Horn of Africa. It connects the Gulf of Aden to the Red Sea, which leads straight to the Suez Canal. Under normal conditions, roughly 7% to 10% of global seaborne oil and over 30% of global container traffic move through this corridor.

When Hormuz was disrupted, daily crude flows through Bab el-Mandeb surged above 7 million barrels. Energy traders assumed the Red Sea route was safe enough, especially after temporary ceasefires late last year briefly calmed the waters.

That safety net turned out to be an illusion.

The Houthis don't need a massive navy to shut down a maritime lane. Cheap anti-ship ballistic missiles, kamikaze aerial drones, and remote-controlled explosive speedboats are all it takes to make commercial marine insurance unpayable. When insurance underwriters pull war-risk coverage, commercial tankers simply refuse to sail. You don't need to sink every ship to halt trade. You just need to sink one or two to panic the entire global fleet.

Cape of Good Hope Is a Costly Long Way Around

When ships can't transit the Red Sea, they're forced to divert around the southern tip of Africa.

A supertanker carrying two million barrels of crude from the Middle East to Rotterdam via the Suez Canal normally takes around 18 days. Rerouting around the Cape of Good Hope adds 10 to 14 full days of transit time. That adds nearly 3,500 nautical miles to the journey.

  • Fuel Costs jump exponentially. Burning an extra 30 to 40 tons of heavy fuel oil per day over two weeks adds hundreds of thousands of dollars to a single voyage.
  • Tonnage ties up instantly. Because tankers spend two extra weeks at sea, fewer ships are available at ports to load new cargoes. Effective global shipping capacity drops by 10% to 15% overnight without a single ship being destroyed.
  • Refining schedules break. European and Asian refineries run on strict blend schedules. Delayed crude deliveries force refiners to cut operating rates, creating immediate shortages of diesel, jet fuel, and gasoline.

This isn't theoretical. We saw early glimpses of this friction during the 2023–2024 attacks when Suez Canal transit traffic plummeted by over 50%. Back then, Hormuz was wide open. Today, both major Middle Eastern oil arteries are under pressure at the exact same time.

Why Energy Prices Will Spike Everywhere

Most consumer-facing commentary focuses on raw crude prices. $90 Brent, $100 Brent, or higher. But the real damage hits downstream.

Gasoline and diesel prices at the pump don't just reflect the price of crude oil coming out of the ground. They reflect refining margins and maritime transport freight rates. When ocean freight rates triple due to long-haul diversions around Africa, the retail cost of fuel climbs even if oil production stays flat.

The problem stretches beyond crude oil. Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) shipments from Qatar to Europe face the exact same geographic trap. Europe spent years weaning itself off Russian pipeline gas by building out LNG import terminals. If Qatari LNG carriers have to sail all the way around Africa to reach Western Europe, gas storage fill rates heading into winter will drop sharply, dragging utility bills up with them.

What Businesses and Investors Need to Do Now

If you run a business with international supply chains or hold energy-sensitive assets, sitting on your hands isn't an option.

  1. Audit your freight exposure immediately. Check if your logistics providers rely on Mediterranean or Red Sea transit lanes. Contractually secure fixed-rate agreements or space commitments before spot container rates surge further.
  2. Shift inventory buffer stocks. Just-In-Time supply models fail during double-chokepoint maritime crises. Increase lead times for critical components sourced from Asia or Europe by a minimum of three weeks.
  3. Hedge energy risk directly. Businesses with high fuel or transport overhead should evaluate short-term energy hedges or fixed-price fuel contracts to cushion against sharp spikes at the pump.
  4. Monitor tanker availability metrics. Keep a close eye on Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) day-rates rather than just crude oil futures. Freight rate spikes are always the first indicator of physical energy bottlenecks.
