To stop a complete grid collapse, India's Ministry of Power approved a targeted transmission deal. Under this arrangement, India supplies electricity to the Nepal Electricity Authority for 18 hours a day, running from midnight until 6 PM daily, through December 31, 2026.

Logistics matter immensely in cross-border energy sharing. The transmission happens through two primary pathways:

  • Up to 600 megawatts flow through the Muzaffarpur-Dhalkebar 400 kV double-circuit transmission line.
  • Up to 54 megawatts are delivered via the Tanakpur-Mahendranagar 132 kV single-circuit line.

This immediate relief prevents blackouts for hospitals, businesses, and homes while engineers assess the wreckage in the river valleys.

What Happens Next for Regional Energy Cooperation

Rebuilding pulverized mountain infrastructure takes years, not months. Heavy silt, destroyed access roads, and ruined heavy machinery complicate every step of the recovery.

The current bilateral agreement provides a vital breathing room until the end of December. Indian and Nepalese energy officials plan to review the long-term power supply quotas heading into January 2027, depending on how fast domestic repairs progress.
