US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor confirmed that India is moving forward with the procurement of these battle-tested, fire-and-forget missile systems, following a State Department approval that cleared a potential $93 million sale package.

The Mechanics of Top-Attack Warfare

Most conventional anti-tank weapons rely on a direct-line trajectory. You aim, you fire, and the projectile smashes directly into the front or side armor of an enemy tank. Modern main battle tanks feature heavily reinforced composite armor in those exact spots, making direct hits a gamble.

The Javelin plays by an entirely different set of rules.

It uses an inverted U-shaped trajectory. When the gunner pulls the trigger, the missile climbs sharply into the air before diving straight down onto the top canopy of the target. That top deck is universally the thinnest, least armored part of any tank. It is where hatches, engine vents, and crew compartments sit exposed. By striking from above, the Javelin bypasses thick frontal skirts and active protection systems designed to stop flat-trajectory threats.

Fire-and-Forget Changes Everything

Old-school anti-tank guided missiles required the operator to keep crosshairs locked onto the target the entire time the missile traveled. That meant the gunner had to stay completely exposed to enemy counterfire until impact. In a high-intensity firefight, staying still for ten seconds is basically a death sentence.

The Javelin uses infrared guidance and an automatic tracking mechanism. Once the operator selects the target through the Command Launch Unit and fires, the missile handles the rest autonomously.

The gunner can immediately drop the launcher, take cover, or relocate to a new position. That kind of mobility saves lives. It also lets smaller infantry units punch way above their weight class against heavy armored formations without exposing themselves to prolonged suppression fire.

Another practical feature involves the weapon's soft-launch design. You can fire a Javelin from inside enclosed spaces like buildings, bunkers, or urban ruins. Traditional rocket-propelled grenades create a dangerous backblast that will burn anyone standing behind the shooter in a confined room. The Javelin's initial propulsion clears the tube softly before the main rocket motor ignites a safe distance away. For infantry fighting in dense urban sprawl or mountain crevices, that feature is invaluable.

What the Defense Partnership Actually Means

This procurement doesn't happen in a vacuum. It follows a series of growing defense ties between Washington and New Delhi, including a major framework partnership aimed at improving interoperability across air, land, sea, and cyber domains. India already utilizes US-made platforms like Apache attack helicopters, Chinook cargo aircraft, and M777 ultra-lightweight howitzers, which frequently fire Excalibur guided artillery projectiles.

Co-production possibilities are already on the table. Both nations want to strengthen their respective defense industrial bases rather than relying solely on traditional buyer-seller transactions. Joint manufacturing allows India to build domestic maintenance hubs and integrate foreign technology into local military ecosystems.

Still, challenges remain. Exact procurement numbers and financial timelines are still being ironed out, and local defense critics frequently question over-reliance on foreign imports when domestic programs like the Nag anti-tank missile system are active. But when militaries face immediate operational requirements along high-altitude contested borders, proven off-the-shelf capability usually wins out.

Ground combat is evolving faster than military doctrine can often keep up. Armor is no longer invulnerable, and infantry units are gaining lethal independence.
