Water levels on Chestermere Lake are finally bouncing back after an upstream oil spill forced a sudden, emergency shutdown of the regional canal system. If you live near the shoreline, you probably noticed the water dropping fast over the weekend. That is not your imagination. When the Western Irrigation District cut off incoming water on July 25, outflows kept right on moving, draining the basin by nearly a meter in places.

Instead of staying contained on-site, the hydrocarbons made their way into the local stormwater network and eventually spilled into the Western Headworks Canal. That canal carries water diverted from the Bow River at Harvie Passage, running straight out of Calgary and feeding directly into Chestermere Lake.
When the Calgary Fire Department and district operators caught wind of the slick, they did not take any chances. Crews rushed to the canal with vacuum trucks to skim the floating oil off the surface before it could travel further east.
